Abstract
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a persistent and disabling neuropsychiatric condition that is manifested by intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive actions (compulsions). The general therapy involves cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), exposure and response prevention (ERP), and pharmacologic therapy with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Although effective, most patients respond partially, relapse, or have adverse effects, and this has indicated the interest of natural ingredients as an adjunctive or different therapy. In this paper, the role of natural compounds, such as amino acids, antioxidants, anti-inflammatory agents, and gut-modulating substances, in OCD management is assessed. Critical issues include mechanisms, clinical relevance, and integration with pharmaceutical agents. Although natural therapies might not substitute pharmacologic treatment in moderate-severe OCD, they have been shown to improve outcomes when employed in an adjunctive manner. A multimodal, integrative approach is an advisable treatment strategy to maximize symptom management, minimize side effects, and enhance long-term prognosis.
