Abstract
This white paper examines the role of natural products in supporting alcohol metabolism and detoxification in individuals with alcohol use disorder (AUD). Alcohol is primarily metabolized in the liver through the enzymes alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) and acetaldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH), converting ethanol into acetaldehyde and then into acetic acid. When alcohol consumption is chronic or excessive, these enzymatic pathways become overwhelmed, leading to acetaldehyde accumulation, oxidative stress, tissue damage, and multi-organ dysfunction.
The paper explores how specific nutrients and natural compounds may support metabolic pathways, reduce oxidative injury, and promote organ recovery. Magnesium is highlighted for its role in enzymatic reactions, ATP production, and regulation of neuromuscular excitability during withdrawal. B vitamins, particularly thiamine, are essential for energy metabolism and neurological protection, as chronic alcohol use commonly results in deficiency and risk of Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome.
N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) is emphasized for its ability to restore glutathione levels, reduce oxidative stress, and modulate inflammatory pathways. Vitamins C and E provide complementary antioxidant protection against reactive oxygen species generated during alcohol metabolism. Zinc supports immune function, intestinal barrier integrity, and alcohol-metabolizing enzyme structure. Milk thistle (silymarin) offers hepatoprotective and regenerative effects, while omega-3 fatty acids reduce systemic and neuroinflammation and support brain and cardiovascular health.
The paper also discusses the U.S. Patent No. US-11896608-B1, which proposes accelerating alcohol metabolism through enzymatic enhancement and NAD+ cofactor support, potentially reducing alcohol persistence in circulation.
Since alcohol impacts multiple organ systems, including the liver, brain, and cardiovascular system, supporting detoxification and organ repair is critical. While mechanistic evidence supports the biological plausibility of these natural compounds, further clinical research is necessary to establish efficacy and safety. The paper concludes that integrative, evidence-informed approaches may complement conventional treatment strategies in alcohol detoxification and recovery.
