Abstract
This paper explores the potential role of natural ingredients as complementary strategies for supporting individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). ASD is a complex neurodevelopmental condition characterized by differences in communication, behavior, and neurological processing, with presentations that vary widely among individuals. While autism has no known cure, current management approaches emphasize behavioral therapies, educational interventions, and symptom-focused medical support. Increasing scientific interest has focused on the integration of vitamins, minerals, and bioactive compounds to support cognitive function, behavioral regulation, emotional balance, and gastrointestinal health alongside conventional care.
The review highlights several micronutrients, including zinc, magnesium, and selenium, which contribute to neurological signaling, antioxidant defense, and immune regulation. Deficiencies in these nutrients may influence cognitive performance, mood, and behavioral stability. Antioxidant compounds such as vitamin C, raspberry polyphenols, resveratrol, and curcumin are discussed for their roles in reducing oxidative stress and neuroinflammation, processes frequently examined in ASD research. Additional ingredients, including orthosilicic acid, algae-derived antioxidants, L-theanine, N-acetyl-L-tyrosine, and plant extracts, are presented as potential contributors to cognitive support through mechanisms related to neurotransmitter balance, circulation, and cellular energy metabolism.
The paper also examines ingredients associated with behavioral regulation and mood stabilization, including D-ribose for cellular energy production and black seed oil for its anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties. These compounds may influence neurological pathways linked to attention, fatigue, and emotional regulation. Furthermore, digestive health is emphasized as a key component of overall well-being in ASD, with ingredients such as bovine colostrum, collagen, pine bark extract, psyllium husk, and flaxseed discussed for their potential roles in supporting gut integrity, microbiota balance, and immune function through the gut–brain axis.
Overall, the paper concludes that natural ingredients may serve as supportive adjuncts to traditional therapies by addressing interconnected physiological systems involved in ASD. Although preliminary research suggests potential benefits across cognitive, behavioral, and gastrointestinal domains, further clinical investigation is needed to clarify mechanisms, dosing strategies, and individualized applications. Integrative approaches combining nutritional support with established therapeutic interventions may contribute to improved functional outcomes and quality of life for individuals across the autism spectrum.
