Abstract
Forensic medicine serves as a critical intersection between medical science and the legal system, providing essential insights into cause of death, injury mechanisms, and identification of individuals. Traditionally grounded in pathology, toxicology, and molecular biology, the field has evolved with advances in scientific methodologies. Recently, interest has emerged in integrating non-traditional approaches including natural compounds such as resveratrol, curcumin, aloe vera, L-theanine, black cumin seed oil, pine bark extract, and velvet bean into forensic applications. This literature review evaluates both traditional and non-traditional approaches in forensic medicine, emphasizing their global relevance, biochemical mechanisms, and potential contributions to postmortem preservation, toxicological interpretation, and practitioner well-being. The review also examines the physiological and pathological aspects of drowning as a model forensic condition. Findings suggest that while traditional methods remain foundational, emerging natural compounds may offer complementary benefits in tissue preservation, oxidative stress reduction, and stress management. However, further validation and standardization are required to ensure scientific reliability and legal admissibility.
