Abstract
Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is a chronic and progressive condition that represents one of the most significant modifiable risk factors for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality worldwide. It is a leading contributor to heart disease, stroke, chronic kidney disease, heart failure, and vascular dementia. In the United States alone, nearly one in three adults is affected, and prevalence continues to rise due to aging populations, sedentary lifestyles, poor dietary patterns, obesity, chronic stress, and metabolic disorders (WHO, 2025). Often referred to as the “silent killer,” hypertension frequently presents without noticeable symptoms, allowing vascular damage to accumulate quietly over years before manifesting as a major cardiovascular event. Despite widespread awareness and the availability of effective pharmacologic therapies, blood pressure control rates remain suboptimal. A substantial percentage of hypertensive individuals either remain undiagnosed, undertreated, or non-adherent to prescribed treatment plans. Barriers to optimal control include inconsistent monitoring, limited patient engagement, therapeutic inertia, socioeconomic disparities, medication side effects, and inadequate lifestyle modification. As a result, uncontrolled hypertension significantly increases hospitalizations, disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), and premature mortality.
The economic burden of hypertension is equally profound. Direct medical costs including hospital admissions, emergency care, medications, and outpatient visits combine with indirect costs such as lost productivity, disability, and long-term care. Collectively, these factors place significant strain on healthcare systems and national economies. Preventive strategies and improved management protocols therefore represent both a clinical and financial imperative.
In recent years, advancements in digital health technologies have transformed the landscape of hypertension management. It further explores how digital health solutions and real-time monitoring technologies can enhance treatment adherence, optimize therapeutic outcomes, and reduce healthcare costs. By bridging traditional clinical care with innovative monitoring systems, hypertension management can evolve from reactive treatment to proactive, precision-based cardiovascular prevention ultimately reinforcing overall vascular health, longevity, and quality of life.
